Tips for a Garage/Yard Sale

Planning on hosting your own garage sale, here are a few things to take into consideration..

  • check the weather for the day of your Garage Sale
  • make sure address is correct on website
  • $1.00 dollar bills is easier to handle
  • keep coins handy
  • try to sale to the nearest dollar
  • organize your items by section (ex: $1. items, $2. items,shoes,toys)
  • label Big items
  • post signs near home w/arrows showing the way (remember to dispose of them later)
  • work/party/brand name clothes is better to keep on the hangers
  • have at least one helper at your side
  • start organizing early
  • when selling electrical items, keep an electrical cord handy
  • turn TV’s or radios on to show that they do work
  • keep a list of your items to track earnings (see inventory checklist)
  • keep a “fanny pack” to put your change into
  • have plastic bags for the customers to put their items in (ex: grocery bags)
  • put balloons in front of your yard for visibility
  • have a calculator handy
  • “bundling” items is also an easy way to sell (ex: bag of shirts for a set price)
  • park y our vehicle of the driveway, make it easier for the buyers to see your items when they drive by
  • what you cannot sell, you can always donate it

Looking for some neat stuff? Here are some things to remember before heading to a garage sale.

  • look at the website for the items you need
  • get directions from the website
  • confirm date on the website
  • inspect the item before purchasing
  • electrical items should be plugged to make sure it works
  • bring small change (ex: $1.00, $5.00 bills)
  • ask questions
  • do they have the manuals
  • bargaining works
  • carpool – divide gas expenses and its fun
  • wear comfortable clothes and shoes

  • if possible, put the Yugioh cards, baseball cards etc.. on a binder with see thru pockets or get sandwich bags and put the price on the outside of the cards
  • count the cards on each sandwich bag
  • toys – like the adults, label the price on your toys
  • keep a list of your items that you are going to sell
  • ask your parent questions when returning the change or keep an adult by your side to count the change being returned
  • do not carry to much change in your pocket
  • earn extra money by selling individual cold drinks for the buyers (ex: water, soda, juices)
